What we're up against in Afghanistan

Gun shows have come under tremendous--ahem--fire in recent years from the American Yellow-bellied Gun Snatcher.  Gotta make sure the paperwork is in order!  Ooooo.  Check those fingerprints!  Register!  Register!  Ow, that noise!

You may not want to see the reality.  That's OK.  Go back to enjoying that decaf latte and soy burger special.

The rest of us sheepdogs will keep you sheep safe.

Recognition

Awards used to mean something.  Hollywood had the Oscar.  Now there are more award shows than dress designers...and more trophies circulating than at a kids' end-of-season t-ball pizza party.

Nevertheless, it feels good to get recognized.

In 2008, several audiobook projects I had the pleasure of working on got critics' nods:  Fidel Castro: My Life by Fidel Castro, and Ignacio Ramonet was named one of the Best Audio Books of the Year by Library Journal.  Thanks to Patrick Lawlor, my co-narrator, for bringing some class to the project.

For the record, I snorted my way through many of Castro's outrageous claims of success and virtue--the man is an oppressive, Communist murderer--but like it or not, he is a major figure in 20th century history, and his story is compelling.  I fixed the snorting in subsequent takes.  The print version of the book also received an Editors' Choice Award from Booklist.

A Publisher's Weekly Listen-Up Award went to Chuck Palahniuk's book Snuff, about the backstage going's-on at a record breaking porn shoot (don't ask).  Not as much sex as you'd expect; much more angst, humor, and personal story.  Fans of Palahniuk will recognize the style.

Finally, The 2008 Washington Institute's Gold Medal Book Prize for Best Book of the year went to The Siege of Mecca, and garnered author Yaroslav Trofimov a cool $30,000.00.       I... got a nice email.

OK, enough hornblowing.  Thanks for your patience.

And the winner is...

For their outstanding sycophantic coverage of what they determined to be "news", the 2008 Fiskie Award "For their non-stop, unseemly, worshipful, overwhelmingly biased coverage in favor of Barack Obama, the winner of the 2008 Idiotarian Award just has to be:

The Mainstream Media!

They've come for you children

Yeah!  What he said!

I think it's important for students to watch the swearing in of a new President.  Extending the school day, and having a party with fake liquor so that the Leftist teachers can bask in orgiastic ecstacy?  Not so much.

Anyway, having the kids pretend to be getting drunk to celebrate our first black president seems a little racist to me. What, no fake Swisher Sweets too?

She’s been at this school for five years and I am having the hardest time remembering a George W. Bush related fake booze and cookies party.

Beautifully said, Stephen.  As they say, Read The Whole Thing.

"It's a NEW CARRRR!!!"

Ever had a brand new car?  Man, you were sooooo excited weren'tcha?  Loved glancing at it every few minutes, loved telling people about it, looked for excuses to hop in and drive it around...

And you wouldn't hear of any criticism about it; that it was a brand new model, never really been tested, and that no one knew if it was reliable or not.  It didn't matter.  It was a Brand New CAR!  It was yours!  It felt GREAT!  Truly, it's a terrific feeling that everyone should experience.  If not for a new car, then for something you're really excited about.

But eventually the feeling fades as the reality of what you bought a car for takes over.  The first dent is heartbreaking, the first breakdown is frustrating, and the first time the "U" word--"unreliable"--pops into your consciousness it's cause for seething anger.  I bought an '89 Honda Accord that I drove for 1500 miles short of four hundred thousand miles.  I finally sold it after 14 years.  Not because it was unreliable, obviously, but because it was finally--finally--about worn out.

In dictatorial East Germany, the official government-produced car was the Trabant.  It was such a disaster that when the Berlin Wall came down people drove them over the border, got out, and left them on the street for scrap.

Tuesday, America gets a new car.

It's all you hear about, all you see on TV and in the news.  And it's a genuinely exciting time for this nation; and one that makes us largely the envy of the world.  There's real optimism among people that hasn't been felt since Ronald Reagan took office.  We should be proud.  We should relish it.  We should enjoy it for as long as it lasts.

And we should pray to God that we haven't picked a Trabant.

HOW much money are we talkin'?

You know that trillion dollar figure Congress is kicking around for the deficit?

How much is a "trillion" exactly?

Well, if you started counting out stacks of Franklins at one $100.00 bill per second, 24/7/365 you'd get to a "trillion" in a little over three thousand one hundred years.

Better get started, Speaker Pelosi.

"Less words...more pictures..."

I've gotten requests for more pics on the blog.  Guess all those words tire some Liberal brains.

OK, done.

That reminds me...  I need a new belt.

And they hammered REPUBLICANS for spending?!

From Ace:  Just a tiny look into the "stimulus", and where your money--and your childrens' childrens' money--is going to go
-$6 billion to weatherize "modest income homes."

-$6 billion to provide internet in "underserved" areas

-$6 billion for "higher education modernization."

-$20 billion in health information technology to "prevent medial mistakes."

-$20 billion to increase food stamp funding

-$87 billion to provide a "temporary" increase in Medicaid funding

-$300 million to provide rebates for people who purchase Energy Star products

-$600 million for the federal government to buy brand new energy efficient cars

-$400 million for state and local governments to buy brand new energy efficient cars

-$2.4 billion for carbon capture demonstration programs

-$350 million to research using energy efficient technology on military bases

-$300 million for grants and loans to state and local governments for projects that reduce diesel emissions, "benefiting public health and reducing global warming"

-$500 million for energy efficient manufacturing demonstration projects.

-$400 million to build major research facilities "that perform cutting edge science"

-$1.5 billion for expanding "good jobs in biomedical research"

And yet this will come as some great surprise to people who thought, "Oh no, this time electing Democrats will be different!"

A REAL taste test.

Now this is an example of effective advertising.

Not practical for commercial TV perhaps, but what a fascinating--and often heartwarming--look at what must have been a fantastic experience for the crew.
